2023 Community Folklife Fellowship

The Community Folklife Fellowship Program is a statewide initiative supported by the NEA, designed to empower individuals from diverse regions and communities in Texas. Through immersive workshops and community partnerships, fellows learn the art of documenting community traditions, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

Fellows of the Community Folklife Fellowship Program are granted a stipend and the opportunity to train in oral history. They will also produce a podcast episode and share their knowledge by teaching a community workshop in their regions.

A carefully selected group of 7 fellows will be chosen from the pool of applicants, representing different areas across the state. Fellows will receive a $1,500 stipend and $1,000 in project funds.

Projects

This fellowship program centers around independent projects, the topics defined by the fellows. See last year’s projects for examples.

Projects will require independent research with communities and culminate in 3 deliverables: a podcast episode, a blog post (with photos or videos), and a community workshop or public exhibit.

1. Each fellow will produce a documentary podcast episode, which Texas Folklife will distribute as the second season of our podcast series, The Folklorist Next Door, through Buzzsprout, our website, Soundcloud, and PRX. 2. Each Fellow will also create a blog post for their project.

3. Each fellow teaches a workshop for community members and/or prepares a public exhibit in their region.

The program will require consistent commitment and independent work. Expect to spend 10-20 hours per month on this project outside of workshops.
