Monthly Roots Music in an Intimate Setting

Bob Hoffnar on the Pedal Steel Guitar and Janie Cowan on the Upright Bass

Austin, Texas – October 10, 2016 – Texas Folklife’s intimate music series featuring roots music and emphasizing the non-profit’s mission to present the state’s traditional arts and culture has been scheduled for October. The concert will be held on Wednesday, October 26, at the Texas Folklife House—1708 Houston Street, Austin, Texas—from 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Pedal steel guitarist Bob Hoffnar will talk about the history of pedal steel guitar music and how he incorporates this legacy into contemporary sounds, followed by a performance featuring Hoffnar and Janie Cowan on upright bass.

Bob Hoffnar is a veteran pedal steel guitarist who incorporates a wide variety of traditional music aesthetics and approaches to the instrument into his playing. He has undertaken studies with Pandit Pran Nath, a Hindustani classical singer and teacher of the Kirana Gharana (school), as well as lessons with Buddy Charleton, who played pedal steel with Texan Earnest Tubb, one of the founders of American Country music. Hoffnar graduated from the Purchase Conservatory of Music in 1998 with a BFA in Composition. Since then he has delved into numerous projects in the music and film industry with popular musicians such as Norah Jones, Cyndi Lauper, and Scott Weiland. He currently performs with his new music/lounge band The Mood Illusion and with a variety of Austin-based country and honkytonk bands.

The House Concert will be an intimate experience. Limited tickets are available and can be purchased at hcsbobhoffnar.brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are available for $10 for the public and $5 for Texas Folklife members. To become a member or renew your membership, go to: http://texasfolklife.org/info/membership.

Proceeds will benefit the artists and Texas Folklife’s statewide public programs. Guests are invited to bring their own lawn chairs. Bottled water, beer, and wine will be available for a donation.

“Please join us for this month’s House Concert,” says Executive Director Charlie Lockwood. “The evening promises to be informative and a lot of fun, as we learn more about the history of the pedal steel guitar and associated music styles from Bob Hoffnar and bassist Janie Cowan. Pedal steel has a special place in Texas music history. Come learn about this unique instrument from Bob Hoffnar, one of Austin’s most active pedal steel players.”

Parking for the event is available in Texas Folklife's gravel driveway, on the street immediately in front of the building, and Asterra Properties (located next door). Overflow parking is available at Recycled Reads (5335 Burnet Rd). Please use the spaces in the back or on the South side of the Recycled Reads building.

Texas Folklife’s House Concert Series is supported by the members and Board of Texas Folklife, the City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Division, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. Additional support for this event is provided by the Texas Steel Guitar Association.
