Houston Chronicle: Czech dance music thrives in 'Oompah Belt,' but for how long?
Houston Chronicle writer Allan Turner examines the future of the traditional Czech music community in Texas. Setting his article in the Houston Heights dancehall SPJST Lodge 88, Turner traces the roots of Czech culture in Texas and also addresses the crisis facing its future. Texas Folklife Executive Director Cristina Ballí states,"People move away from their communities. They don't participate as much in community traditions, the church picnics and weekend dances." Turner identifies the Big Squeeze Accordion Contest and the Schulenberg Polka Symposium as programs that strive to preserve these endangered traditions. Click the link below to read the whole article.
