Position: Contract Media Producer
Start Date: Rolling
Time Commitment: Approximately 10-15 hours per week, depending on program schedule
Description: Texas Folklife is recruiting contract media producers with artistic/folklore/journalism/education aspirations to work with Stories from Deep in the Heart, our award-winning youth audio documentary training program. We work with Austin Independent School District and several local middle and high schools to produce community podcasts and in-depth audio documentaries about family and community traditions. Producers will also help to plan and lead community workshops on various aspects of journalism, media production, and creative writing related to story production. Producers will be paid monthly at the rate of $15-20/hour
As a producer, your primary job will be to assist student groups to finish their audio stories. We will be working with a central Austin school on semester-long projects. Producers will work with the Stories team to develop, promote, and teach other small workshops throughout the year.
You will be asked to help with some or all of the following tasks: 1) researching and teaching basic folklore, 2) scheduling interviews, 3) using audio recording technology, 4) logging audio footage, 5) writing a documentary script, 6) recording narration, 7) assembling and editing audio in Audacity or Hindenburg, and 8) other miscellaneous tasks related to the production of a short radio piece. A short training will take place with our production team to get everyone up to speed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Experience conducting recorded audio interviews
Familiarity with audio recording equipment
Familiarity with audio editing software (e.g. Audacity, Hindenburg, Pro Tools, Logic, or Adobe Audition)
Experience with remote recording preferred
Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills
Ability to handle multiple priorities
Knowledge and use of standard office equipment
Skills and Experience:
Works well with students and teachers in a classroom setting
Reliable and sticks to deadlines
Ability to step into a variety of roles to help kids produce their stories
Interest in fostering diverse arts, culture, and community traditions
Well-versed in audio editing software and techniques
Experience with journalism, creative writing, or storycraft
Reliable transportation
Fingerprinted and approved by AISD
