Introduction to Middle Eastern Music
This workshop will serve as a brief introduction to Middle Eastern music. Topics will include instruments, rhythms, forms, maqam/makam (Arab and Turkish music theory), genres, and styles. Great for dancers wishing to learn more about music and context! Participants will receive handouts including sheet music and other resource materials.
Skill level: All.
Charlie Lockwood holds an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from the Univ. of California, Santa Barbara, where he played the 'ud in the UCSB Middle East Ensemble, directed by Dr. Scott Marcus. Charlie has performed, studied, and taught a wide array of music and cultural traditions, and now performs in Austin with the world fusion group Atlas Maior. He has toured Egypt and Turkey and in 2013-2014 taught beginning ‘ud lessons at UT Austin for the Bereket Middle East Ensemble.
