Big Squeeze 2018 Showcase – Nederland/Groves
Texas Folklife is pleased to announce that a Big Squeeze Community Discussion & Talent Showcase will take place in Groves at Larry's French Market & Cajun Restaurant on Saturday February 24, 2018.
For this event we are going to hold a community discussion with local musicians, community members and stakeholders about sustainability of Cajun music in Southeast Texas, and follow up with some live music! Texas Folklife is committed to community engagement and helping to encourage young local musicians to play traditional music, and carry on Cajun accordion and Cajun music culture.
Some of Our Discussion Topics Will Include:
-What are the community needs in terms of youth traditional music participation?
-How can Texas Folklife encourage or facilitate community needs?
-Who are the teachers or tradition bearers that can serve as mentors or teachers to get young musicians involved? What will encourage them to participate?
-What can we learn from the active Louisiana-based music communities in order to get more Cajun youth participation in Texas?
-How can arts organizations, supporters, school music teachers, and community members partner together to work on this initiative?
The Big Squeeze Community Discussion & Talent Showcase at Larry's French Market & Cajun Restaurant is one of many Big Squeeze events across Texas in 2018. Texas Folklife's Big Squeeze Accordion Program searches for the top youth accordionist talent in Texas. All genres of accordion music are welcome including Conjunto, Zydeco, Cajun, Polka and more.
