Event Category:
Non-Texas-Folklife Event
Event Date:
Sat Jun 14, 2014 - 10:00PM to Sun Jun 22, 2014 - 2:00AM
Annelize Machado & Maraa Dance Theatre present:
Kavi, a performance featuring Contemporary dance & Hindustani Vocals

Cafe Dance

3307 Hancock Drive

Austin TX, 78731

Machado's choreography is driven by her desire to express bhakti (devotion) in its simplest form, action. The work is inspired by the writings of Purandaradasa, Andal, and Muktabai.
These devotional writings charge the classical and contemporary dancing bodies in the space.

Beautifully textured, the show weaves together live Classical singing, non-traditional music, and elements of Western Contemporary & Indian classical forms such as Bharata Natyam and Kathak. Kavi presents an unconventional answer to how the essence of classical art might be expressed in contemporary performance.

Dancers & Creative Collaborators : Emily Pry, Gayathri Prasanth, Mysti Jace Pride, Preya Mangalat Patel, and Rujuta Narwekar

Hindustani Vocals by
Srikanth Balaji (June 14th)
Manasi Joshi-Singh (June 21st)
