Stories Highland Park Elementary Listening Party

This Friday, Texas Folklife will be premiering almost 30 new podcasts produced by 4th grade students at Highland Park Elementary School. Over the last 2 months, producers for Stories from Deep in the Heart, Texas Folklife’s award-winning radio education program, have worked with Highland Park students and teachers to produce these stories.

Students learned every aspect of audio production and radio journalism, including interview techniques, audio editing, and creative writing. After choosing their subjects, they recorded interviews with parents, teachers, and community members. The stories cover a wide range of subjects, including the first day at school, the rare fish of central Texas, and the experience of leaving home for the first time.

The stories will be aired for friends and family this Friday, 11/30, during the students’ normal class time. They will be available on Soundcloud and Public Radio Exchange (PRX) immediately after the listening party. Thanks to Ms. Roberts, Ms. Fryer, and Ms. Sawada for being a part of this project!

“Stories from Deep in the Heart” is supported in part through grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art; the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and Department of Telecommunications & Regulatory Affairs Grant for Technology Opportunities; and generous support from the Austin Independent School District.
