The One Day Symposium on the Folklórico tradition will feature Plenary Talks by Prof. Olga Nájera Ramírez (University of CA, Santa Cruz) and Andrea Guajardo (Ballet Nepantla --NYC) and featured speakers: Viviana Enriquez (San Diego, CA), Gabriela Mendoza Garcia (Laredo, TX) Belinda Menchaca and Jeannette Chavez (San Antonio) antwelve other scholars and practitioners speaking about the tradition in the Chicanx community. Manuel C. Flores will present on his new book Choreographing Mexico: Festive Performances and Dancing Histories of a Nation.
For over 50 years the Mexican-origin community in the United States has enjoyed the dance performance known as folklórico. During the heyday of the Chicano Movement, folklórico dance groups were formed across the country on university campuses, cultural centers, and often hosted by community organizations. Dedicated teachers taught classes preparing young dancers for annual performances and many young people engaged in this cultural affirming and demanding enterprise. This important gathering of dance scholars, performers, directors, and teachers aims to gather interested scholars and practitioners to discuss the history and the significance of these events. Trinity University and Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center invite you to submit proposals for paper presentations at a one-day Symposium on the folklórico dance tradition. We are gathering as dancers, instructors, scholars and lovers of folklórico to share and learn from each other.
