Mobley
Austin-based artist Mobley grew up all over the world, from the Spanish Mediterranean to the California coast. Perhaps it’s because of this itinerant childhood that he finds it so hard to sit still. Mobley does it all: he’s a songwriter, producer, visual artist, filmmaker, and charismatic frontman with a reputation for kinetic live shows. The same applied to this effort, with Mobley serving as both Director and Composer.
“Making this piece ended up being a really cathartic experience. We got together, rolled the cameras, and had a wide-ranging conversation about what it’s been like to be Black during this pandemic and what we feel like our responsibility to each other is. I walked away from the shoot deeply moved by what had been shared… every second of the conversation was worth hearing,” Mobley shared in reflecting on the project.
Mobley teamed up with Jacob Weber (Director of Photography, Editor), Amanda Johnson (Assistant Camera), and Sergio Trejos (Sound) to capture and create this PSA, featuring interviewees Alec Brownridge, Jacob Fisher, Megz Tillman (of Magna Carda), and Cherelle VanBrakle.
Austin native Cherelle is Director of Health Promotions and Community Advocacy at People’s Community Clinic and also provided invaluable insight to this entire PSA effort since the project’s origins in January 2021.
We extend thanks to The George Washington Carver Museum and Site Coordinator J Savannah for providing site and scene.
This PSA was funded by Austin Public Health.
