In conjunction with the 3rd annual Huapango Sin Fronteras Festival, Texas Folklife welcomes the female huasteco trio Las Palomitas Serranas. The trio will perform son huasteco - one of Mexico's most distinctive and uplifting folk music traditions. Son Huasteco is marked by florid poetry, soaring high falsetto vocals, and ornate and elaborate violin improvisations.
The Huapango Sin Fronteras Festival was founded and is organized by Austin-based huapango arribeño trovador (poet-practitioner) Raul Orduña. Orduña and Texas Folklife Executive Director Emeritus and Huapango Sin Fronteras Festival Adviser Cristina Balli will introduce this Mexican folk and dance tradition and answer questions about the Huapango Sin Fronteras festival.
