Stories Summer Institute Reception and Listening Party 2015

Folklorist / NPR & BBC radio producer Rachel Hopkin will present a sampling of her work in radio and folklore, as well as completed audio documentaries produced at the Stories Summer Institute by this year’s participants. The presentation and reception on July 10th is free and open to the public. The reception begins at 6PM, followed by the program at 7pm. Light refreshments and appetizers will be served.
This year Texas Folklife is partnering with The City of Austin George Washington Carver Museum and the Eastside Kings Festival to document the stories of east Austin African American blues musicians, highlight the historical importance of east Austin blues, and celebrate the living blues traditions still thriving in Austin.
Texas Folklife's 2015 “Stories from Deep in the Heart" Summer Institute is a 5-day intensive fellowship in audio documentary production with professional producers, journalists and cultural workers. High school students and middle or high school teachers/administrators participants are guided through production of short audio documentaries on themes related to folklife----family and community traditions. Fellows will complete one audio story in groups during the program. The “Stories from Deep in the Heart” summer institute is part of an on-going series of workshops for teachers and students in the Austin area and Central Texas schools.
