Folk Arts and Health

The Texas Folklife Folk Arts and Health Program is a community-focused initiative aimed at preserving and promoting the rich cultural traditions of Texas through folk arts while emphasizing their positive impact on health and well-being. This program brings together folk artists, cultural practitioners, and healthcare professionals to facilitate workshops and activities that celebrate traditional Texan arts, including music, dance, crafts, and storytelling. By integrating these folk arts into health-related contexts, the program aims to improve community well-being, foster cultural preservation, and enhance overall quality of life in Texas.

Hechos, No Miedo/Facts, Not Fear
Hechos No Miedo: Facts, Not Fear is a community-based participatory program that seeks to engaged community members in health-based conversations that respect and honor community knowledge, embrace lived experience, and help overcome the complex barriers affecting equitable access to healthcare.

Stories for Creative Forces
Using trauma-informed frameworks and approaches, Stories for Creative Forces is a program for Military, Military Veterans, and Military Families. Program Leads facilitate workshops designed to help current and prior service members and their families express themselves through mixed-media arts, audio and video story crafting, and traditional and cultural spoken word performances.

Environment Engaged
The Texas Folklife Environment Engaged Program is a dedicated effort to explore and document the intricate relationship between the people of Texas and their natural environment. This program seeks to celebrate and preserve the state’s diverse cultural and environmental heritage through various initiatives. It involves research, educational activities, and community engagement to highlight the ways in which Texas communities have shaped and been shaped by the environment. By fostering a deeper understanding of these connections, the program aims to promote environmental stewardship and the preservation of traditional knowledge, ensuring a sustainable and culturally rich future for Texas.
