Our Initiatives are made possible by their generous support

The National Endowment for the Arts was established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government. To date, the NEA has awarded more than $4 billion to support artistic excellence, creativity, and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities. The NEA extends its work through partnerships with state arts agencies, local leaders, other federal agencies, and the philanthropic sector.

The mission of the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) is to advance our state economically and culturally by investing in a creative Texas. These programs strengthen Texas communities by cultivating the knowledge and judgment that representative democracy demands of its citizens.Humanities Texas is one of fifty-six nonprofit state and jurisdictional humanities councils in the U.S. We are a nonprofit, educational organization founded in 1973, supported by appropriations from the U.S. Congress and the state of Texas and by gifts and grants from foundations, corporations, and individuals. A volunteer board governs the organization.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. Because democracy demands wisdom, NEH serves and strengthens our republic by promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans. Texas Folklife’s efforts in digital humanities and humanities workforce retention over the course of 2020 to 2021 have been made possible in part by a major grant from the NEH. Community Partners

History Museum located in San Benito, TX.

The Texas Folklore Society collects, preserves, and shares the practices and customs of the people of Texas and the Southwest.

We yearn for connection to our ancestors and our descendants, and with our community, our neighbors, our friends and extended family. We’re interested in those who are similar to us and those who are different. Through coming together, through study, research, travel, writing, and passing along customs, traditions, stories, and songs, we connect our past with our present and pass it along to those who come after us. We preserve and collect folklore through books, annual meetings, curriculum, presentations, and outreach. Members gather each year in a different part of the state for affordable festivities that include a fun-filled tour of the area, a hootenanny (or two), listening to great folks tell tales and give papers on various folklore topics, a banquet and music—lots of music.

Austin Friends of Traditional Music (AFTM) has its origins in the autumn of 1974 when a group of musicians gathered in an Austin living room with a special purpose in mind: to produce a traditional music convention with competition for pickers and singers. By November of that year, the first convention was held. It was financed on a shoestring budget and the only publicity was free publicity. And its producers wondered if there would be enough interest for the convention to last until noon. But by midnight, their fears had dissolved. Living room pickers from all over the area attended, competed, and got to know each other and AFTM was on its way.
