Texas Folklife Presents: Tambores del Pueblo

Join us on February 25 at Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches in Austin, TX for a special evening celebrating the rich Afro-Puerto Rican tradition of bomba! This pop-up event will feature a performance by Tambores del Pueblo, an Austin-based bomba y plena ensemble dedicated to preserving and sharing these dynamic traditions. The night kicks off with an introductory lecture by Elizabeth Castillo Mena (Eli Mena), an ethnomusicology PhD student at UT Austin, whose work explores Afro-Caribbean music.

About the Artists:

Tambores del Pueblo – Formed in 2018, this commun
ity ensemble brings together artists and educators from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Panama. Led by Karolina Arocho González and Adam Rosario, TDP offers free dance and percussion workshops to underserved communities, fostering cultural education and connection through music.
Elizabeth Castillo Mena (Eli Mena) – An ethnomusicologist, artist, and researcher, Eli’s work has been exhibited across Latin America, Spain, and Equatorial Guinea. She brings deep insight into Afro-Caribbean music traditions and their role in racial and cultural discourse.
