Bramaya is an Austin-based West African Dance and Drum Ensemble that combines new musical ideas with traditional West African rhythms and dance. Bramaya was founded and is led by Master Percussionist, Aboubacar Sylla. The group is named in honor of his father’s village in Guinea, West Africa.
Aboubacar Sylla has been performing professionally for over 25 years and loves teaching and sharing the music, dance, and culture of West Africa throughout the United States and worldwide.
Imani has a deep background in West African dance and has been a Bramaya member since its beginnings. One of her passions is to create cultural arts programming that amplifies and celebrates African heritage and traditions through drum, dance, music, cultural knowledge-sharing and storytelling, and she has traveled to many countries to immerse herself in the culture and train in these traditions.
Imani is the executive director of IFA Dancing & Drum, providing African-rooted programming to the masses. She is also founder of Alegria do Samba and has been teaching and performing African-Brazilian samba since 2009. Imani is also co-founder of RE-CLAIM!
