By Dr. Elisha Oliver

Dear Friends,

At Texas Folklife, we are privileged to be stewards of the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that defines our state. Our mission to preserve, promote, and celebrate the diverse folk arts and traditions of Texas is not just a passion but a commitment to our communities and their legacies.

Behind every successful culture focused organization stands a dedicated and engaged board of directors. Today, we want to shine a light on the invaluable role that our working board plays in advancing our mission and ensuring our organization’s vitality.

A working board of directors is more than a group of individuals who gather periodically to make decisions; they, along with a dedicated executive director, team members, and community constituents comprise the heart and soul of our organization. Our directors bring a wealth of expertise, diverse perspectives, and unwavering dedication to the table. From artists and educators to community leaders and advocates, our board members represent the mosaic of voices that make up the cultural landscape of Texas.

It is important to note their contributions go far beyond their titles. A working board is actively involved in strategic planning, fundraising efforts, and outreach initiatives of the organization. They roll up their sleeves, lend their skills and networks, and champion our cause with passion and conviction.

Their support is especially crucial in times of challenge and uncertainty, such as the recent global pandemic. Throughout these unprecedented times, our board was a source of strength, resilience, and innovative thinking. Together, we navigated uncharted waters, adapted our programs and services, and continued to serve our communities when they needed us most. Creativity and innovation have propelled us forward as we have returned to in-person programming.

The importance of a working board cannot be overstated. They provide guidance, accountability, and inspiration to our staff, volunteers, and supporters. They are ambassadors for our mission, advocates for our artists and traditions, and champions for the transformative power of the arts.

As we look to the future, we are grateful for the unwavering commitment and support of our board of directors. Together, we will continue to preserve, promote, and celebrate the cultural heritage of Texas for generations to come.

If you or someone you know is interested in serving as a Texas Folklife board member, drop me a line at: eoliver@texasfolklife.org.

With gratitude,

Elisha R. Oliver, PhD, E.D.
