Texas Folklife Announces Anthony Dopsie as Music Heritage Anchor & Cultural Strategist
Austin, Texas – Texas Folklife is proud to announce a new partnership with acclaimed zydeco artist and cultural bearer Anthony Dopsie, who will serve as Music Heritage Anchor & Cultural Strategist. In this role, Dopsie will help guide Texas Folklife’s expanding music heritage initiatives, including documentation, artist-centered storytelling, and earned-revenue strategies connected to Texas Folklife Records.
A nationally recognized musician, tradition bearer, and cultural ambassador, Anthony Dopsie brings decades of lived experience, artistic excellence, and intergenerational leadership rooted in Creole and zydeco traditions. His appointment reflects Texas Folklife’s continued commitment to centering tradition bearers not only as performers, but as co-creators, strategists, and stewards of cultural futures.
“Anthony Dopsie represents what it means to carry tradition forward with integrity, innovation, and deep community accountability,” said Dr. Elisha Oliver, Executive Director of Texas Folklife. “This partnership honors his role as a heritage anchor, someone who holds cultural knowledge, activates it in contemporary spaces, and helps shape sustainable pathways for artists and traditions to thrive.”
Dopsie is a two-time GRAMMY nominee and a celebrated tradition bearer in Louisiana zydeco. His work was recently recognized with a 2025 GRAMMY nomination for The King of Zydeco Tribute, a collaborative project featuring major artists including The Rolling Stones. In 2021, he was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, honoring his contributions to the music and cultural legacy of the region.
As Music Heritage Anchor & Cultural Strategist, Dopsie will:
-
Advise on music heritage programming, documentation, and public storytelling
-
Support the development of Texas Folklife Records as a platform for ethical recording, licensing, and artist-forward revenue
-
Serve as a cultural guide for engaging communities, audiences, and emerging artists
-
Advise on the restructuring of Texas Folklife’s signature Big Squeeze Competition and music events
-
Help align music heritage work with Texas Folklife’s long-term economic engine and sustainability goals
“I’ve spent my life not just playing music, but carrying culture,” said Anthony Dopsie. “Partnering with Texas Folklife allows me to help shape how our stories are recorded, shared, and respected, while creating real opportunities for artists and communities. This work is about legacy, not just the moment.”
Over the course of his career, Dopsie has recorded and collaborated with renowned artists including John Fogerty, Jimmy Buffett, and The Jazz Crusaders, and has toured or shared stages with artists such as Prince, Alicia Keys, Elton John, and James Brown. His work has also appeared in film and television, including Road House 2, Walker, Texas Ranger (episode “Black Bayou”), and Touched by an Angel. He has performed on national television programs including Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, Live with Regis and Kelly, Wheel of Fortune, and The Gayle King Show, and in 1998 performed at the White House for President Bill Clinton.
This partnership signals a broader shift in how Texas Folklife approaches heritage work, moving beyond preservation alone to embrace strategy, infrastructure, and artist agency. By anchoring music heritage initiatives in the wisdom of tradition bearers like Anthony Dopsie, Texas Folklife continues to build a living, evolving mosaic of Texas cultures.
