Join us Tuesday, April 28 at Batch Craft Beer and Kolaches for our next Salon Series event. Ushaq bridges Ottoman and Persian classical repertoire with folk and popular tunes from Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean, exploring the shared musical traditions of SWANA and its neighbors.

The evening opens at 7 PM with a presentation by ethnomusicologists Hamidreza Fallahi and Dimitris Gkoulimaris on modal traditions in Middle Eastern music. The performance follows at 8 PM, centering on Persian music and its rich traditions.

Ushaq, an ensemble that bridges Ottoman and Persian classical repertoire with folk and popular tunes from Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean, explores the shared musical aesthetics that unite the diverse cultures of SWANA and its neighbors.
Hamidreza Fallahi is a PhD student in ethnomusicology at the University of Texas at Austin. Hamidreza is a performer of Persian Setar and Iranian classical music, and his research focuses on Persian classical poetry and southern Iranian regional music.
Dimitris Gkoulimaris is a PhD student in ethnomusicology at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently researching the musical practices of Greece, Turkey, and the Eastern Mediterranean, with a secondary focus on the music of Latin America.

Free and open to the public. Funding provided by the Austin Cultural Arts Division, Texas Music Office, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
